BARKER: Unique quilt will tie in to village centennial

BARKER The village will have a unique way of tying up its centennial in 2008. Residents and natives of Barker are donating ties to be made into a quilt that will be hung at the Village Hall.

“These are the ties that bind,” said designer and creator Linda Fitch. “It will be a unique quilt when we’re finished.”

The ties will be sewn together by the team of Pat Fuller, Dottie Frost, Carol Hotaling, Ruth Wendler and Fitch. Fitch has made many quilts and teaches quilting.

These ties are attached to memories.

Former Barker Mayor John Hayden has donated his Lions Club tie, which has a dark background and the golden face of a lion. He has been a member of the Lions Club for 40 years and serves as treasurer and secretary.

The ties have been collected around town, and many are on display at Thee Barker Store, according to chairman Lynn Hayden. Others have been collected at Pizza Wings and Things and the Barker Barber Shop.

The men who donate ties will have their names placed on the tie with permanent marker. Natives of Barker and families of late residents can donate ties.

The quilt will be 48 inches in diameter and will take an unknown number of ties. The deadline for donating is Jan. 15.

Barker plans a Centennial Warm Up on Friday, with horse and wagon hayrides through the village, courtesy of Norm Atwater. Old-time music will be played on the firehall stage from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Barker Birthday Bash Light Parade leaves Barker Central School at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will wind its way through the village. Students will have cocoa and refreshments for sale at the school. There will be a 15-minute fireworks display over the Barker sports fields.

Businesses, organizations, youth and church groups and neighboring communities were invited to join Barker's celebration with a vehicle or float in the Light Parade.
