Ice arena receives state funding

LOCKPORT —

The Lockport Ice Arena & Sports Center will receive $1 million through the Regional Economic Development Council Awards.

The funding was announced today by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as part of the $60.8 million awarded to Western New York.

“This is tremendous news because this project is in the heart of Lockport,” said state Sen. George Maziarz. “The Lockport Ice Arena will demolish a long vacant supermarket and will bring much needed capital investment and tourism to that location. I am pleased that the Regional Economic Development Council saw this project’s importance to Lockport and has made it a priority.”

The Lockport Ice Arena, a $13 million, 93,500-square-foot project, broke ground in October and is set to be open in the fall of 2014. The facility will host a two-pad hockey arena with related retail support services.
