Fox News, CNN report he resigns "effective immediately"
Congressman Chris Lee, R-26, has resigned his seat in Congress, announced in an e-mail he sent his constituents, over an e-mail exchange he allegedly had with a woman in Maryland.
The photos and e-mail exchange, obtained by Gawker.com, show that Lee told the woman he was a divorced lobbyist living in the Capitol Hill area.
Since the story broke on Gawker this afternoon, both local and national media had reported that Lee denied the claims.
Calls to Lee's office and cell phone have not been returned, but a statement emailed from his around 6 p.m. states:
“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.
“The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately.”
