WEATHER: Cambria is ready for snow with plenty of salt

Staff Reports
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

With a winter storm warning in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday and up to a foot of snow accumulation forecast for some local areas this weekend, communities across Western New York are bracing for one of this season’s last blasts of winter.

While many residents hit the supermarket aisles to stock up on food staples such as bread, milk and eggs, municipalities want to make sure they’ve stocked up on another staple — road salt.

Many area cities and towns have seen their salt supplies depleted, so deep into a fairly snow-filled season.

Cambria is not one of them.

Town of Cambria Assistant Highway Superintendent Steve Kroening says his town is well prepared for today’s expected snowstorm. The town’s snowplows are ready to go, with plenty of salt and full tanks of fuel, he said.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for snow and blowing snow, with winds at 20 to 30 mph, and gusts up to 40 mph. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s today. The accumulated snowfall is forecast to be between 3 and 6 inches during the day, and about the same amount again tonight.

Sunday is forecast to be partly sunny, with a chance of snow showers in the morning and highs in the mid-20s.

Through much of the coming week, wintry weather is on tap — until Thursday, when the mercury is expected to climb to the lower 40s. Meteorologists are calling for partly sunny skies and a chance of rain showers on Thursday.

And, look on the bright side: It’s only 12 days until the beginning of spring — on the calendar, at least.
