CAMBRIA: Child nearly drowns in pool

CAMBRIA — A mother performed CPR on her 2-year-old son Tuesday after his teenage brother reportedly found him face-down in the family’s pool.

Karen Hoyt of Plank Road told deputies that her 13-year-old son, Jarrett, found her 2-year-old son, Justin, floating unconscious in their above-ground pool about 12:14 p.m.

The teen reportedly yelled for his mother and dove into the pool to get his brother out.

Justin was not breathing and beginning to turn blue when he came out of the water, the report said.

His mother performed CPR until the boy vomited water and began breathing on his own, the report said.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene shortly afterward, along with members of the Cambria Volunteer Fire Department and Rural Metro Medical Services.

The 2-year-old was transported to Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo for treatment. His condition was unavailable, but a patient information representative said he had been admitted to the recovery floor.

Witnesses said the security ladder for the pool had been up at the time of the incident, but the boy’s wagon had been near the pool, the report said.

According to a 4-year-old who witnessed the incident, Justin had pulled the wagon over to the pool and climbed on it to get into the pool.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
