Father, 3 children found in Michigan wilderness

GLEN HAVEN, Mich. — Authorities found a suburban Detroit father sought on a domestic dispute warrant and his three children in remote northwest Michigan on Monday evening after an extensive land and air search.

Police have not identified the 50-year-old man from Orchard Lake, who was arrested on a domestic violence charge. Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich said the man, his 14- and 10-year-old daughters and 9-year-old son appeared unharmed. The children were exhausted, hungry and thirsty, authorities said.

They were discovered about 8 p.m. Monday in a rugged area of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. They were found on a hillside about a mile from where the man’s car was discovered earlier in the day.

The search for the man and his children began when his wife – their mothers – called police about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, said Emmett County Sheriff Peter Wallin. “I’m not going to get into specifics on it,” said Wallin. “Domestic violence involving his wife.”

Borkovich said there was no indication the man would hurt his children but added, “We've got to look (out) for the best interests of the kids.” Searchers used helicopter surveillance and K-9 dog teams to find the man and the children.

Authorities were still talking to the man Monday night to determine what had happened.
