Cold, snowy winter is over! (Maybe)

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Congratulations, everyone, we made it! This weekend, we turn our clocks forward. Next Thursday, we reach the Spring Equinox and can finally send old man winter back to his vacation home in northern Alaska. If I could give all of you a high five I would, but you’ll have to settle for my suggestion to watch the music video “Fly” by Sugar Ray on youtube; it’s a classic sunshine jam.

When it comes down to it, seasons are 20 percent physical, 80 percent mental. When there’s a chilly day in July you don’t unpack your back-to-school gear because summer is over, you just throw on a light sweater and let the good times roll.

I’m sure some of you, like me, have given up on checking the weather report. I was finally worn down after years of disappointment and embarrassing situations in which the forecast was for sun and I planned a fancy picnic in the park, only to end up shoveling snow to get down to grass.

Because of this, each day is a mystery. Should I wear shorts? Will I need a hat? Who knows? But it also allows me to be an optimist. As far as I know, from today on it’s going to be full-on spring. That means basketball in the park, grilling every meal ... and Slurpees from the 7-Eleven, the ultimate good weather treat.

When we reach these periods of transition between seasons, I always put forth an effort get into the right state of mind, but we do live in the real world (or in one of multiple real worlds, or as a holographic projection inside of a super computer, science still isn’t sure). You may be reading this while you wait for your car to warm up after a surprise snowstorm. If that is the case, don’t lose heart. Much like a kid stuck in school or a soldier in the field, envisioning the joys that lay ahead, once your ideal has been dashed, can help carry you through the cold times.
