ROOT: Ah! Run! Winter is coming!

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — It is time for the people of Western New York to get ready, because I don’t think there is any more turning back. That is right, the cold weather is on the way and there is nothing that you can do to stop it.

I have lived here my entire life. I do not consider myself any kind of genius, but I am no longer surprised when it starts snowing outside in November and December. There is nothing more annoying than the local newscasters for all three channels when they get on the six o’clock news and act like that first November snow in Western New York is akin to God himself walking on the waters of the public marina at WideWaters.

I don’t normally watch the local news anyways, but I cannot turn it off fast enough when the top story of the day is the fact that it is snowing in Western New York in November. I guess all of that war, crime and politics stuff is insignificant compared to the falling of snow in Western New York in November.

Has it snowed yet in November 2012? Yes, it has. I saw the snow myself. Will it snow again in November 2012? It probably will. You see, that is what you signed on for when you agreed to live here. In exchange for one of the lower costs of living in the country, you get to shovel a little snow once in a while.

For me, the taxing part is not the fact that it snows. The part that grinds my gears is when people complain about that first light dusting of snow as if Satan himself sneezed all over their front lawn. We can fix up downtown and even do something with the parking ramp on Main Street, but there is nothing we can do about the snow every winter. Sorry.

I know I seem bitter, but it is only because these people on television act like snow is this new thing they discover every winter. You want to know what else bugs me? Other parts of the state of New York are getting hammered by snow right now, as we speak. But we here in Western New York still have green grass. Where is the Weather Channel? Where is CNN reporting that Western New York is not buried in snow with the rest of New York State?

Everyone thinks it snows here all the time because that is what the media tells them. If the media were to tell the whole story, then maybe the rest of the world would not think we were such a wasteland.

I prefer to concentrate on the things that make the most of our wintery weather. I am looking forward to the Winter Wonderland on Market Street this holiday season. I have heard a lot of stories about what it is supposed to be like, and I am interested to see what actually happens.

I was checking out the plans in the paper for the upcoming holiday season and we have a lot of things to choose from around here. It looks like the Palace plans on being busy dishing out the holiday spirit this year. I could not make the Palace’s open house, so I am anxious to see what things look like now.

Let’s face it; there are some pretty spectacular Christmas light displays in the Lockport area. Each year, the wife and I like to cruise around Lockport and see what people have done to their homes. I wish I had the time and resources that some of these people seem to have. I would love to have my house be that house on the block that people look forward to every Christmas.

So hide the women and children and run for the cellars! Winter is coming! It happens every year, so let’s not act like we haven’t seen it before. I am encouraged by the amount of people in the area that are prepared to embrace winter this year and make something special out of it.

After all, we didn’t have a winter last year, and this could be the last winter that we ever have. So we might as well make the most of it.
