Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — I could do a long column on the whole George Zimmerman thing, but I would rather spend some time trying to undo all of the bad that the media is currently doing in this country. Let’s just look at facts and avoid speculation, because that seems to be something that CNN and the other news networks are most definitely not doing.
From everything I have read, George Zimmerman never brought race into this episode. He was concerned with the “punks” that he claims have been terrorizing his neighborhood, but he never said anything about race. Trayvon Martin was killed on a rainy night in Florida while wearing a hoodie that covered his head. Unless George Zimmerman has x-ray vision, it would have been extremely difficult for him to see what race Trayvon Martin was.
George Zimmerman is half white and half Peruvian. He is just as white as President Obama is black. Yet the general consensus is that President Obama is our first African-American president. If that is the case, then George Zimmerman is a Peruvian man accused of killing an African-American teenager. I am just following logic to get to these conclusions. I am not adding anything to this.
If you follow the line of logic that Zimmerman is Peruvian, then that takes the Caucasian element completely out of the picture. Race, from all of the evidence that has been presented, was not a motivating factor in what happened to Trayvon Martin.
George Zimmerman was an overzealous neighborhood watch volunteer who felt it was his civic duty to patrol his neighborhood carrying a loaded weapon. He followed Trayvon Martin, even after the police asked Zimmerman to not follow Martin. Trayvon Martin was on his way home from the store and found a rather large person following his every move. If I were Trayvon Martin, I would want to know why I was being followed as well.
