When life feels overwhelming, chillax!

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Ah, peace ... that wonderful calm that often follows a period of hectic activity, a time of war or a season of storms. It is sometimes elusive. It is sometimes overlooked, but it is often desired, and it is always necessary in order to renew, restore or rebuild the many avenues of life. Whether it’s physical, mental or spiritual, our lives need times of peace in order to remain balanced and healthy.

One of the top definitions of peace is “freedom from disturbance; quiet, tranquility.” It sounds wonderful, but, sometimes, we have to actively “pursue” peace or learn to recognize and take advantage of tranquil moments when they present themselves. Sometimes, we must choose to make time to relax, especially when life feels overwhelming or endlessly busy.

A few years ago, a common colloquial term for relaxation was “chill out” “just chill” or a combination of the words chill and relax: “chillax.” When my son Kyle was a teen, “chillax” was one of his favorite expressions, and he used it frequently throughout his high school years.

I confess to you, the first time I ever heard the word, I was in the middle of one of my motherly rants, incessantly reminding him to do something. (I refuse to call it “nagging.”) Kyle, calmly and politely said to me, “Mother, ‘chillax’ — I’ve got this.” I stopped mid-sentence and cracked up laughing. At that precise moment, it sounded like the most reasonable, practical thing I could do in the situation, and yes, my son completed the task at hand.

I like to look at this time of year as the “space between holidays.” After weeks of planning and preparing for Easter or Passover, it’s nice to take a moment to rest and recover from all the work that went into their celebration. The first round of spring holidays is behind us, but life and all of its busy requirements still goes on: Work, school, practice, rehearsal, meetings, mortgages, etc..
