VINCENT DAVIS: Already behind on Christmas? It's OK!

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Some of you may have noticed that two Fridays ago my writing was conspicuously absent from the paper. No doubt that disrupted the flow of your week and threw your entire life into turmoil, so I feel I owe you an explanation.

I couldn’t find time to write because I was taking advantage of Halloween sales so I could finish my Christmas shopping in a timely manner.

What’s that? You haven’t even started your Christmas list?

Then I’ll tell you what I think we all already know: With only 39 shopping days until Christmas, you’re really behind the eight ball!

Microsoft Word has written about the creeping expansion of the Christmas season, so none of us should have been surprised. But still, even I, who started my Christmas 2013 plan of attack Dec. 27, 2012, was a little caught off guard by how early things started this year.

The “Christmas season” used to start at Thanksgiving. A few years ago it cannibalized Halloween, which means in 2013, you should realistically start getting into the spirit of the season around June.

Had you done so, you would have had a chance to get in on the pre-orders for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. As it stands now, you’ll need $4,000 and fast EBay reflexes to even have a chance of putting one of those under the tree.

Those of you who are finding yourselves behind the metaphorical eight ball, do not despair. Finding yourself so far behind that there’s almost no point in trying at all can be oddly freeing.

Think about it. Daniel Radcliffe had already saved Hogwarts as Harry Potter before he could shave. The guys who started Instagram were done with most of the hard work at an age when most of us weren’t even done explaining to our parents that we needed to take a year to find ourselves before joining corporate America. Corey Feldman had already played the voice of Donatello in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie when he was 18.
