JACKIE DAVIS: Walking through life seasons

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — “To everything turn, turn, turn, there is a season turn, turn, turn; And a time to every purpose under heaven.” Those are the lyrics to a song by the Byrds that was very popular when I was a little girl. I remember singing along with the radio whenever I heard it. I was thrilled when my father used its lyrics in a sermon, one Sunday morning, and explained that the song was based on the Bible verses found in Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8:

“A time to be born and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to pluck what is planted…. A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance…… A time to gain and a time to lose….A time to keep silence and a time to speak; A time to love and a time to hate; A time of war and a time of peace.”

Now that I am (absolutely) no longer a little girl, I have gained a fuller understanding of the meaning of these priceless words. There are life seasons that we walk through by our very existence. These life seasons can help shape our character — for good or bad, depending on how we walk through them, and what we learn from them.

We can walk through seasons of sorrow, and let them spiral downward into depression, or we can prayerfully come through them, (sometimes with necessary help) and rise to a place of remembrance, reflection, and rejoicing. We can walk through seasons of loss, and become bitter, or we can “count our blessings” and become better while we wait for brighter days.

Seasons of joy can encourage others around us to rejoice with us. Seasons of abundance can be used to provide for those who are in need. Even difficult, challenging life seasons can give us wisdom to help others going through similar circumstances in the future. (There is something to be said for having “been there, done that” and learned from it).
