Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Hooray for March! It will be worth losing an hour’s sleep on Saturday just to move us closer to spring. There is a really busy week coming up, with a movie, a concert, a pancake breakfast and auction, bouquet sale and more, so get ready to put winter behind us.

Today is Ash Wednesday for Christians, the first day of a solemn 40-day journey through Lent. Many will give up a favorite food or activity for Lent as a sign of sacrifice, but I suggest, as I do every year, a different approach. The world around me will not be enriched if I give up chocolate for 40 days, but if I choose to do an extra good deed each day of Lent, it may make my little corner of the world a better place. Why not consider making your Lenten sacrifice more meaningful by giving up a portion of your time and talents to help others?

March brings us Music in Our Schools month. Don’t miss the first concert at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Herbert Ludwig Auditorium, when the Jr./Sr. High School Band performs. The Barker Music Parents Club would also like you to take home some fresh popcorn, available after the show. This year they are featuring many flavors from The Kernel in Wilson, including caramel corn — plain, peanut, cashew and pecan) — chocolate, with peanuts and carame; and regular – including salt & vinegar, cheddar cheese, hot jalapéno and kettle corn). The Kernel takes pride in locally growing their own popcorn; it is harvested, shelled, dried, and popped right here in Niagara County. Proceeds benefit the Barker music department’s uniforms, patches, etc.

The next meeting of the Barker Seniors is on Friday at the Barker Fire Hall. It’s the wearin’ o’ the green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and a prize will go to the best-dressed lass and laddie. The Lenten lunch menu includes a frittata, hash-browned potatoes, mixed vegetables, white bread, molasses cookie, milk, coffee and tea. Call the Somerset Town Hall at 795-3575 to reserve a lunch. The suggested donation price has risen to $3.25. Coming up on March 21 are the Niagara Country Fiddlers. Remember that the meetings are canceled whenever the Barker Central Schools are closed because of the weather. Call Jo Ann Greenwald at 795-3787 for information.
