Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Interested in having a better understanding in the future of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and its impact on the area?
The Niagara Military Affairs Council (NIMAC), in conjunction with Leadership Niagara, is looking for area residents to join the Niagara Commanders Program, a select group of leaders in business, education, government and nonprofit organizations in the Buffalo-Niagara region. A spokesman said this year’s program fee is $300, with the application deadline set for March 31.
A series of five events in the program, starting in April, are planned at the Air Reserve Station, the Navy Operational Support Center & Marine Corps Reserve Center, Buffalo, and Hancock Field, Syracuse (home of the 174th New York Air National Guard Attack Wing).
The NIMAC spokesman said each event is designed to afford members an opportunity to meet with members of the military who will talk about training, operations and their roles in the nation’s defense system.
The Commanders Program also encourages participation in a partnership that fosters a practical understanding of leadership objectives, military leadership, organizational development and the missions, customs and traditions of the U.S. military.

NIMAC, an all-volunteer group of community leaders, was established several years ago in the face of the federal government plans to close military installations across the country. Initially, the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) recommended 182 closures or realignments with an estimated savings to taxpayers of $15 billion over 20 years. NIMAC swung into action in a concerted effort to save the Falls air base from closing, citing its strategic mission and the economic impact it has in the Buffalo-Niagara area.
