Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The winter of 2013-14 is sure going to be a memorable one, and we have a long way to go. While the extreme cold and harsh weather tends to make us want to hibernate, cabin fever sets in pretty quickly. Bundle up and enjoy all our community has to offer, but be safe out there.

Barker Community Education classes begin soon, and you can go online to www.barkercsd.net to get the information and registration forms. The winter semester runs from Jan. 27 to March 27, and classes are available in antique auto restoration, basketball, beginner knitting, body sculpting, exploring digital photography, family swim, hall walking, paper class, p.m. workout, stretch and tone your body, stained glass, volleyball and water aerobics. Special one-day classes include five-minute quilt block, 10-minute quilt block, AARP Smart Driver Class and a five-hour pre-licensing driver class. Senior citizens get a 50 percent discount for classes. For more information, contact Director Jim Cantella at 795-3203, ext. 7315 or at jcantella@barkercsd.net. Make sure to register early to avoid cancellation of classes.

Catch “The Hobbit, Desolation of Smaug” at the Lockport Palace Theatre. The next Curtain Up Theatre production is Arsenic and Old Lace, a hilarious misadventure you’ll really enjoy. Make a resolution to visit and support our Historic Lockport Palace Theatre; it’s an amazing community treasure.

There will be a UNYTS Blood Drive at Barker Central School from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the old gym, sponsored by Barker’s AFS Club. They are looking for donors age 17 or older, weighing 110 pounds or more. The drive takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the old gym. Walk-ins are welcome.

Sunday brings the year’s first pancake breakfast at the Barker Fire Hall, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The annual Barker American Field Service event gets everyone out of of their post-holiday hibernation. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children under 12 or $20 for a family pack (two adults and three children in immediate family).There will be a basket raffle, with a drawing at 12:30 p.m. Winners need not be present. The menu is pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, juice and coffee.
