Stroll Around Newfane

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — While our northern communities escaped the worst of the snow from the polar vortex, the cold and wind have been a real challenge. Please continue to look out for elderly or infirm friends and neighbors, and look out for pets that are outdoors. We’re just two weeks into winter and pretty tired of it already, so let’s make an effort to look out for each other and make it a little more bearable. To all the first responders, utility and streets workers and others who brave the elements to keep us warm and safe, a hearty thank you is well deserved.

Here are some totally random bits of trivia to liven your conversations this week. An elephant trunk has no bones, but 40,000 muscles. Aluminum used to be more valuable than gold. All major league umpires must wear black underwear while on the job. Americans will spend more money this year on cat food than baby food. Almost all breakfast cereals are made of types of grass. An olive tree can live up to 1,500 years. Antarctica is the only land on our planet not owned by any country. An apple, potato and onion would all taste the same if your nose was completely plugged.

The Town of Newfane will be purchasing carts to help make recycling collection easier and more efficient. They anticipate distribution sometime in February, and recycling will be scheduled every other week. The town will keep residents informed.

Do you know someone in need of a hot meal or some fellowship? Olcott Methodist Church offers a Community Kitchen open to the public, held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sundays and Tuesdays. There is no fee and everyone is welcome. If you know someone who would like some soup, please call the church at 778-8879 and they will deliver some to them.
