Lockport Union-Sun & Journal —
• The First Baptist Church, 6047 East Ave., Newfane, invites the community to a free lunch. They will be serving from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting on July 2 and running through Aug. 24. The menu will start with assorted sandwiches, with special foods designed for children, beverage, chips, and desserts. The church offers other outreach programs to the Newfane community, including a clothes closet, and a Migrant Food Pantry from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays. They collect and redistribute books and magazines to promote literacy and will accept donations of school supplies for distribution in August. If you would like to donate or volunteer, call 940-8286 and arrangements can be made.
• AARP is offering a special deal to anyone working in the education field, including teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, janitors, Sunday school teachers, etc. For a reduced rate of $5, you can take the six-hour course that will get you a 10 percent discount on auto insurance for three years (or reduce license points). The Rev. Patricia Ludwig is a certified instructor and will be presenting the class, a refresher course on driving skills, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 10 and 11 (you must attend both) and again at that time on Aug. 21 and 23. The classes will be held at Del Fuego Restaurant on Lockport-Olcott Road. If people want to take the course, but are not in the education field, they may still register for the AARP member price of $17. Make reservations by calling 433-0976 or stop by the restaurant to sign up.
