Winterfest, take two

Organizers expect event to be bigger and better

GASPORT — Winterfest was a big success last year and Winterfest 2011 may even be bigger Saturday at Royalton-Hartland Elementary School and the Hartland Bible Church.

“Last year was the first year and well over 650 people attended, that’s a huge response for an inaugural event,” said Helen Feron, the chairman of the steering committee. “This year we expect more.”

Entertainment and activities are scheduled from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. including a basket auction at the Hartland Bible Church at 3 p.m., where Magician Robert Geckler will also perform at 2:15 p.m.

The event is geared towards school aged children and free to children 10-and-under. Admissiong is $3 for adults and includes Chinese auction tickets.

Refreshments will be available and 30 vendors and crafters will participate.

In addition to the event being sponsored by the Town of Royalton at the Roy-Hart Elementary School, it is funded with money raised from last year’s event, according to Geckler. This year, money will go to three charities: Honor Flight of Buffalo; the Soldier Garden in Gasport which is being relocated to Veterans Park near the canal; and to fix the playground at the Roy-Hart Elementary School.

The Mahon School of Irish Dance will perform at 11 a.m. at the school and the Siberian Huskey Club of the Niagara Frontier will have a dog sled demonstration.

Entertainment includes two sessions with musician Glenn Colton. The basket action will begin at 3 p.m. at the church.

Children’s games are planned. Events include snowshoeing, sleigh rides, snowball throwing, face painting and crafts for kids.

Hartland Carriage will provide horse-drawn rides and Upstate NY Transplant Services will conduct a blood drive.

The Masonic Safety ID Program (MSID) will give away free safety identification to all ages. The Safety ID Kit includes a paper print out of basic information and a laminated ID. All pertinent information is burned onto a mini CD-ROM which includes profile pictures and fingerprints. The Mini CD-ROM contains other safety information and a coloring book that can be printed out.

It is the Masonic fraternity’s way to give back to their local residents, according to Jeremy C. Ward, Niagara-Orleans District MSID Chairman.

The gold sponsors are Absolut Care of Gasport, the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal, Sigmamotor Inc. and the Roy-Hart Business & Professional Association.
