Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — State pension chief to address legislature

A state comptroller’s representative will address the Niagara County Legislature next week on the topic of municipal employee pension funds.

Tom Nitido, deputy comptroller for the New York State and Local Retirement System, will give a brief presentation and field county legislators’ questions about the funds. The legislature meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the county courthouse.

The Comptroller’s office oversees pension funds for civil servants and determines the percentages of employee payroll that all municipalities must pay into the funds. Municipalities have been challenged to cover with double-digit percentage increases in the mandated contributions, year after year, over the past decade.

Nitido’s visit to Niagara County is arranged by county lawmaker Dennis Virtuoso, D-Niagara Falls, legislative minority caucus leader. Virtuoso said he secured a promise from state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, when DiNapoli visited Niagara Falls late last year, to meet with the legislature or send a representative to discuss pension issues.
