Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — I love autumn. There’s something about this colorful season that encourages homespun, family activities, so get out there and enjoy them!

Thank you to all the folks who supported the annual auction by the Eastern Niagara Hospital’s Newfane Branch Auxiliary. Whether you donated a prize, baked cookies, volunteered or attended the auction, it helps support our local hospital in many ways.

Here are this week’s odd trivia facts to mull over with your coffee. Dogs and cats consume more than $11 billion worth of pet food a year. Thirty-five percent of the people who use personal ads for dating are already married. The wingspan of a Boeing 747 is actually longer than the distance of the Wright Brother’s first flight. Possums have one of the shortest pregnancies for mammals, just 16 days. In England, the Speaker of the House is not allowed to speak. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. If you tried to count the stars in the galaxy at the rate of one every second, it would take around 3,000 years to count them all. In the last 4,000 years, no new animals have been domesticated. The human heart creates enough pressure in the bloodstream to squirt blood 30 feet.

The “Circuit Stompers,” Newfane’s Robotics team, has announced the details of the upcoming 5K run. Participants are asked to pre-register by Oct. 24 for the Nov. 2 event. There is a fun run starting at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K starts at 10 a.m. The race will start and finish in the Newfane Elementary School parking lot. The entry fee is $20 until October 24; $25 after and race day. Cost for the Fun Run is $5. Entry forms are available at Budwey’s, Shoppe on Main, Ontario Shores FCU, Wilson’s Pizza, Curves, Newfane Middle School and High School main offices and other locations. You can also get information from one of the Circuit Stompers (the students, not the robots!) or by calling Bill Neidlinger at 697-2688. The race course is in the village and is flat and fast. There will be refreshments and Age Group Awards after the race.
