Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Give blood, adopt a pet, visit the Van Horn Mansion ghosts, school your pooch or rummage for goodies. The possibilities this weekend are endless, so get out and enjoy all the community has to offer.
Stump your friends. Here are this week’s odd trivia facts to share. The first color of Coca-Cola was green. The words orange, purple and silver cannot be rhymed. The only insect that can turn its head is the praying mantis. The book most often stolen from public libraries is The Guinness Book of World Records. To help it dive deeper, a crocodile will swallow stones. Camels can go a long time without water, but a rat can go longer. To protect their eyes from blowing sand, a camel has three eyelids.
Give the gift of life at the American Red Cross Blood Drive to be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at Snap Fitness, 3976 Lockport-Olcott Road, Wrights Corners, For an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or go to www.redcrossblood.org. Walk-ins are welcome.
Have you taken a tour of the Van Horn Mansion by candlelight? This is the perfect time of year to check out the resident ghosts! The Town of Newfane Historical Society will sponsor Haunted Candlelight Tours from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and on Oct. 25 and 26. The ghost of Malinda and other hosts offer candlelit tours and eerie stories of the previous and current residents of this 1800s Victorian mansion. There is a $5 admission fee, but parking is free. If you have a large group, call 778-7197 to make reservations.
Save A Pet is holding a Pick-a-Pet show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at PetSmart in Lockport. Puppies and kittens are cute, but require a lot of care and training. An adult animal, like my own cat Aja Baby, already has a distinct personality, so there are few surprises. These pets are so grateful for a “fur-ever” home that they give you unconditional love and devotion. Is there a spot in your heart and home for one of these fur-babies? If you decide to adopt, let me know so we can share your news with our readers.
