'Tis the season for festivals, raffles

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The distinct chill in the air early this week had folks hauling out the heavy coats and winter woolies. It’s odd that gloves, like socks, always seem to lose their mates. As you are sorting through that cold-weather gear, think of the many people out there who cannot afford warm clothes and donate your excess to local clothing pantries or organizations. Your closet will have more room and some child waiting for the bus one winter morning will be truly grateful.

Thank you to all who volunteered and to the crowds who attended the Old Fashioned Farm Festival at the Babcock House this past weekend. We are truly lucky to have this glimpse into yesteryear right in our community.

What’s next for the Somerset Historical Society? Join the members Sept. 27 for a hayride and ghost stories. Beginning at 7 p.m. they will provide hayrides around the grounds and lakefront, followed by ghost stories in the barn. There will be cider and doughnuts and a great opportunity for some family fun.

Now that our students are settled in for a new year, it’s time to get ready for Open House. Pratt Elementary’s event is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 tonight. The Junior/Senior High School hours are 6:30 to 8 p.m. Parents of eighth graders going on the trip to Washington, D.C., will meet from 6 to 6:30 p.m. in Herbert Ludwig Auditorium.

The Barker Seniors will meet Friday at Barker Fire Hall. Assistant county attorney Gary Billingsley will be in to help answer legal questions that seniors may have. The group welcomed six new members last week and membership is always open.

Julie’s game starts at 10:30 a.m., the business meeting is at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served at 11:45. Lunch, supplied through the Niagara County Office for the Aging’s nutrition program, consists of a cold plate with sliced turkey, provolone, lettuce, mustard or mayo, Italian pasta salad, pineapple upside-down cake, milk and coffee or tea. Seniors must call the Somerset Town Hall at 795-3575 by Thursday to order a lunch (and also to reserve a place if bringing their own lunch).
