Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Welcome to October! It’s a really busy weekend around town, with the Barker Fire Company’s fall raffle event and the fun Sunday planned by the Barker PTSA. Fans of the Barker Farmer’s Market can stop by the village park on Sunday to see some old and new vendors. I’ll be there twisting animal balloons, so stop by to say hi.

It’s flu shot time. Many folks don’t want to make a doctor’s appointment and risk germy waiting rooms to get their shot, but it is really important to be covered before flu season catches you unaware. You can get a shot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Thee Barker Store. A pharmacist from Middleport Family Health will be there to give you the newest vaccine. Shots are covered by your health care plan; just fill out the forms there and bring your insurance card. Those who want a shingles vaccination can also get one at this time, but you need a prescription and you can reserve a shot by calling MFHC at 735-3261 to schedule an appointment.

The Barker Seniors will meet Friday at the Barker Fire Hall. Julie’s game starts at 10:30 a.m., the business meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. and lunch served at 11:45 a.m. The Niagara County Department of Aging nutrition lunch will be country-fried fish, tartar sauce, scalloped potatoes, creamy cole slaw, roll, ambrosia, milk and coffee or tea. Seniors must call the Somerset Town Hall at 795-3575 by Wednesday to order a lunch (and also to reserve a place if you are bringing their own lunch). We will be distributing information about the New York State Sheriff’s Association Yellow Dot Program, designed to make your health and contact information available to first responders if you have an accident or medical emergency on the road. Everyone age 55 or over, from any community, is invited to join the fun group; dues are $2 a year. For information contact director Jo Ann Greenwald at 795-3787. Master storyteller Howard Edmond, who did the ghost tales at Babcock House last weekend, will entertain the seniors at the Oct, 18 meeting.
