Stroll Around Newfane

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — There may not be snow, but there’ll be plenty of Ho! Ho! Ho! in Newfane as Santa kicks off the season. He arrives in the parade on Friday and makes other appearances as well.

Here are some fun facts about Santas around the world, where Christmas gifts are delivered by men — and women — not known as Santa Claus. Gifts come from Père Noël in France, St. Nicholas or Sinter Klaas in Holland, Father Christmas in England and the Three Kings in parts of Latin America and Spain. In Germany, Christkind, an angelic messenger of Jesus, visits children. Babouschka, a grandmotherly figure, brings presents in Russia. Jultomten is a gnome who rides a sleigh to distribute presents in Sweden. La Befana is a kindly old witch who leaves gifts for Italian children. Come to think of it, isn’t it usually the women who do most of the buying, wrapping and gift-giving for everyone?

Newfane’s Annual Holiday Light Up and Parade begins with a 5:30 p.m. parade on Friday, when Santa arrives on a horse-drawn wagon. Talk to Santa after the parade at the Main Street gazebo; where everyone enjoys hot chocolate and cider, with free cookies.

Friday brings the 8th Annual Candy Cane Craft Show and Cafe, held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Newfane United Methodist Church, 2699 Main St. The café will again offer homemade hot food at reasonable prices. A bake sale includes their popular cookie platters as well as many other goodies.

The first night of the Living Nativity at Newfane’s Grace Bible Church is Friday. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., you can enjoy a 30-minute guided walk through the Christmas story and beyond. The event continues Sunday and Dec. 13 and 15. Park behind the Newfane Town Hall and take a shuttle bus. While-you-wait activities include Christmas music, coffee, hot cocoa and cookies, and the kids’ corner offers crafts. Admission is free.
