Stroll Around Newfane by Julie Obermiller

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Autumn is in the air! I got to spend 17 hours in Newfane on Tuesday with my fellow election inspectors, one of 16 at the Town Hall Community Center. It was an opportunity to chat with readers and see what’s going on in Newfane/Olcott. Thank you for sharing your news and views about the column. The only good side of driving the dark country roads at 4:30 a.m. was the appearance of Orion in the sky. It’s my favorite constellation and always reassuring that the heavens are unchanged, despite the turmoil here on earth.

How about some history trivia for November? Did you know that World War I ended on the 11th day of the 11th month at 11 o’clock in 1918? “November” comes from the Latin novem, meaning nine, because it was the ninth month of the Roman calendar. The Berlin Wall came down in Nov. in 1989. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November, 1963. The NFL was formed in November, 1959 with eight teams, including the Buffalo Bills. Parker Brother’s Monopoly was introduced in November, 1935. The first push button phone made its debut in November, 1963.

The fourth annual PB&J Drive has begun and will run until Dec. 6. In Newfane, drop off your donations of peanut butter, jelly and marshmallow fluff at Red House Music, Emma’s Closet, Flint Hardware, Bank of America, Karma Graphics, Tammy Jo’s Café, Newfane Library, Wrights Corners Wine & Spirits, First Niagara Bank, Newfane Family Dentistry, Countryside Merchant, Town of Newfane, Newfane Methodist Church, Crossroads Pizza and Newfane Central Schools. A protein-filled PB&J sandwich is the classic American way to spread the love.
