NT DPW workers injured as truck flips

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — CAMBRIA — Three North Tonawanda city employees were injured Wednesday afternoon after the garbage truck they were riding in overturned at Shawnee and Lower Mountain roads.

Niagara County Undersheriff Michael J. Filicetti said the vehicle was heading northbound on Shawnee Road when "for some unknown reason they lost control, went through an intersection and started to go eastbound on Lower Mountain Road," after the driver was unable to come to a halt at a stop sign.

North Tonawanda Department of Public Works Superintendent Brad Rowles said the employees were found with the truck flipped over on its side. The truck came to a rest on Lower Mountain Road. No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the accident, police said.

One employee was taken by Mercy Flight to the Erie County Medical Center and two others were sent to Eastern Niagara Hospital-Lockport hospital, according to Rowles. Their injuries are believed to be non-life threatening and the hospital visits were viewed as a precautionary measure.

The accident, which occurred at approximately 12:28 p.m., sent dozens of emergency workers to the scene. As of late afternoon a portion of Lower Mountain and Shawnee roads were shut down, as a hazardous materials team worked to contain what Rowles described as a "very, very slight leak" from the truck.

Crews also worked on lifting the truck off its side to be towed away, a process that was still ongoing as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The truck was headed to the Modern landfill in Youngstown, by the same path city workers have traveled almost daily for 25 years, according to Rowles.

New York State Police are conducting a commercial vehicle inspection to try and determine the cause of the rollover, whether it be a health issue with the driver or an issue with the truck itself, according to Filicetti.
