Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Happy Fourth of July! Things are heating up for this weekend’s birthday party for America, in more ways than one. I hope you get out and enjoy all the great family things going on in our communities, but please being careful in the sun. One sunburn now increases your child’s risk of skin cancer later, so remember to keep them covered. Don’t keep pets outside in the extreme heat and make sure everybody stays hydrated. The best holiday weekend is a safe and healthy one!
'Kissing Granny' does it again
Barker’s “Kissing Granny,” Madeline Chenez has turned in another bag of cash to support the Relay For Life in Lockport. Madeline, who volunteers four days a week as an aide at Barker School, hugged and kissed her way to $2,821 this year. In 13 years she has raised well over $20,000 in memory of her daughter Terry Chenez and she inspires all of us with her selfless giving, great smile and positive attitude.
Berries into jam for the needy
Another charity endeavor comes from Carrie Johnson of Newfangled Homesteading in Barker. Carrie makes all kinds of natural products and she's on the lookout for local fruit over-ripening on the vines for her “Fill your pantry and theirs” project. She will make it into jams and preserves to sell, with all the proceeds going to our local food pantry.
You can help feed those in need with your leftover bounty and Johnson will gladly come and pick through your plants. Message her on Facebook at Newfangled Homesteading or call her at 548-4271.
Good Ol' Boys at the market
