Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A variety of free, hands-on activities for children and adults will be offered Saturday at the Erie Canal Discovery Center, in conjunction with the weekly Lockport Community Market on Canal Street.

The Discovery Center, 24 Church St., is hosting a "Shiny New Penney" scavenger hunt for youths between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. At the community market, local artist Alec Maslowski is leading a free kids' painting activity between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A bread-making class will be held at the Discovery Center from 10:30 a.m. to noon.  Beginners will learn how to make peasant bread, blitz bread (no mixer required) and pizza dough ... and taste the pizza afterward. The free class is limited to 25 students and registration is required; call 434-0212 or send an e-mail to lockportmainstreet@verizon.net.

Also from the Discovery Center, free, guided Flight of Five walking tours will begin at 11 and 11:30 a.m.

At the Canal Street gazebo, musician Jeff Krull is making acoustic rock music from noon to 1:30 p.m. Shawn Duchscherer, who plays solo acoustic jazz, blues and classic rock, is performing from 2 to 3 p.m.

The open-air community market features local vendors selling fresh produce, baked goods, meats, jewelry, artworks, gifts and more. It's open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday through Aug. 24.
