Stroll Around Newfane: Something for everyone this weekend

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — There is so much going on in the Newfane/Olcott area over the next few weeks, we’ll skip the trivia and get right down to business!

The Town of Newfane is looking for lifeguards for the summer season at Olcott Beach. Applicants must be certified in lifeguarding and waterfront safety. Apply in person at the Newfane Town Hall Supervisor’s office, 2737 Main St., or call Laura Rutland at 807-1104.

Knitting For Yourself is a new feature at Shoppe On Main this month. From 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays, knitters are invited to come in and knit with others and share ideas and patterns. It’s not a class, it’s just a place to sit and knit. Go to www.shoppeonmain.com for a list of classes and events.

The “Spring Fling” Chinese Auction and Craft and Vendor Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, 2730 Transit Road. It’s sponsored by the Newfane Community Neighborhood Watch. For information call Mary Dunning at 940-1586 or Linda Bixler at 778-8488.

It’s chowder sale time! The Wrights Corners Exempt firefighters will be dishing up their homemade chowder from 11 a.m. until it’s sold out on Saturday. You can eat in or take out (please bring containers for larger quantities) at the hall, 4043 Lake Ave. (Route 78).

The Concordia Kahunas will host a drive-through only Chiavetta’s Chicken Barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3121 Beebe Road. Meals consist of a half chicken, macaroni salad, potato salad, a roll and butter and dessert. Tickets are $9.50; get them from any team member or call Shelley at 778-5991 or Karen at 751-9402.

Neighbors are putting together a benefit for Margaret “Marie” Walker, who recently underwent a serious and costly medical crisis. The local waitress has no health insurance and friends want to help. They will hold a basket raffle and bake sale from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Newfane Community Room. For a $5 donation, you can learn new dance moves in a dance-athon by students of Diane’s School of Dance on Main Street (where Marie’s children take lessons). If you would like to donate to the event, call 754-1073.
