Medina Journal-Register to close May 30

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The Medina Journal-Register will publish its final edition on Friday, May 30, publisher Diane Crowe announced Wednesday.

Crowe said subscribers to the thrice-weekly paper will be offered trial subscriptions to the daily Lockport Union-Sun & Journal.

The Journal-Register, with a circulation of 1,500, is published Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Lockport is published Sunday and daily, except Tuesday, and has a circulation of 7,500. The communities are adjacent to each other.

Crowe said despite efforts to improve the paper's performance by consolidating business and production operations with nearby sister publications, the Journal-Register could not sustain itself economically.

Subscribers to the Journal-Register who paid in advance beyond the final edition and do not want to sample the Lockport paper and continue beyond the trial period will be issued a refund, Crowe said.

Crowe said the four employees of the Medina paper were notified of the paper's closing. One of them will transfer to the Lockport paper to fill a vacancy there.

The closing will mark the first time since 1903 Medina has been without a home-based paper. The Daily Journal started then, followed by the rival Medina Register. They were merged in 1970 to form the Medina Journal-Register.

The Journal-Register and the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal are part of the Greater Niagara Newspapers group that includes the Tonawanda News and the Niagara Gazette.
