• The annual Oktoberfest at Olcott Fire Hall is back this year, with music by the “The Frankfurters” and lots of amazing German food by Joanne Stanton and crew. Join the fun from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 20. The History Center will have a basket raffle to add to the fun, and they will be drawing for the Amish quilt. The dinner includes sauerbraten, bratwurst, roast pork, sauerkraut, sweet and sour cabbage, German potato salad, chef salad, applesauce, rolls, coffee or tea and dessert. A cash bar will be provided. Ticket price is $25 and it will sell out quickly. You can get information or make reservations by calling 434-7433.
• "You Can Knit Socks!” a three- part class given by a local knitting expert, will be held from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 13, 20, and 27, at Shoppe On Main. This class is designed for those who know the basics of knitting. Cost is $20. Materials can be purchased at the store, or if you prefer to bring your own supplies, call 778-4310 for what you will need.
• Organizers have planned the 10th annual Joe’s 5k Run and Walk for Nov. 3 at the Newfane Elementary School, and they are looking for sponsors and volunteers. The event is held in memory of Joe Schuler, who passed away in 2002 while preparing for the Cross Country season. The majority of the proceeds will again this year go to the Newfane Food Pantry and the Outreach Center at St. John’s Church. It is being sponsored by the Newfane Sports Boosters. Costs are Fun Run with no T-shirt $5, Fun Run with T-shirt $20, the 5K Run is $20 if pre registered by Oct. 25, or $25 after Oct 25. The Fun Run will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 10 a.m. The school pool will be open at 11a.m. for the family swim. There will be an awards and food, including soup, chili, fruit, donuts and drinks immediately following the run. Registration forms are available at the Newfane schools, and businesses around town.
