Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Even if you don’t own a pooch, it’s a great cause and there will be lots to enjoy in the beautiful park, including music on the outdoor stage, food trucks, merchandise vendors and demonstrations including the Niagara County Sheriff’s agility dogs. There also is a huge playground nearby for the kids. Check out the Bark For Life WNY Facebook page for fun photos and information.
Our pets are an important source of comfort during times of illness and Bark For Life helps recognize their loyalty while helping in the fight against cancer. Pre-registration online at www.relayforlife.org/barkwesternny is encouraged. Registered dogs get a purple bandana (those raising $100 get an event T-shirt for their owners) and there are purple bone “Survivor” dog tags for entrants who have had canine cancers. Our local Weimeramer celeb, Dirk Markee, is two years cancer-free after treatment for lymphoma and he will be there to lead the pack.
Also, stop by to vote for the top cat in the “Kute Kitty Kontest,” by making a donation to the ACS. Enter a photo of your cat for a $5 donation and get a vote for every $1 in donations to the ACS. Pictures will be posted at www.julieobermiller.vpweb.com and on Facebook and people can vote by donating before or during the event. A huge basket of kitty delights awaits the winner.
YMCA Camp Kenan is offering a five-day Swim Camp next week, in the large in-ground pool at the camp on Lower Lake Road in Barker. Sessions are a mix of competitive swimming, stroke progression, pool games and out-of-water conditioning.
The camp will be held Monday through Friday. The cost is $100 per Lockport Family YMCA member and $175 per non-member; lunch is included every day. Campers should have enough swimming skill to be able to complete the 50-yard freestyle. Sign up your child by visiting the YMCA or calling 434-8887. There is a bus traveling between the YMCA and Camp Kenan daily. For more information, visit www.campkenan.com.
