My inbox is empty, so this is a good time to share your own news. I know there are lots of great things happening in Newfane and Olcott, so be sure to send me your news. On the trivia front, here is an assortment of strangeness. Did you know that coffee comes from an edible fruit? The cicada fly, found in Africa, spends 17 years of its life sleeping; and only two weeks awake, during which it mates and then dies. You are more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than a poisonous spider. A donkey will sink in quicksand but a mule won’t. To have your picture taken by the very first camera you would have had to sit still for 8 hours. The heart pumps about 1 million barrels of blood during an average lifetime. Americans collectively eat 100 of chocolate every second. The abdomen of the ant contains two stomachs; one stomach holds the food for itself and second stomach is for food to be shared with other ants.

Bring your pooch to the next Puppy Social, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Shoppe On Main. All puppies 3 to 18 months of age are invited. Your pet must have proof of rabies, and you must pre-register by calling Dog Trainer Karen Drumm at 638-1211. The cost for the event is $5 per puppy. Space is limited, so call early.

Cabin fever? Why not learn something new? Crochet classes for all levels are held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. every Thursday at Shoppe On Main, 2714 Main St., Newfane. Walk-ins are welcome and the cost is $5 per student.
