You’re invited to stroll over to Barker from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday for the Community Recruit and Chinese Auction at the Barker Fire Hall. There will be free children’s activities like tattoos, balloon animals, a coloring contest and a craft. Get free blood pressure checks and enter free giveaway raffles at organization booths. Everybody is welcome. There will be hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, desserts and beverages for sale and a 50/50 draw. The auction draws at 5 p.m. and winners need not be present. Shake off those winter cobwebs and come out and play!

Do you know someone in need of a hot meal or some fellowship? Olcott Methodist Church offers a Community Kitchen open to the public, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Sundays and Tuesdays. There is no fee and everyone is welcome. If you know someone who would like some soup, please call the church at 778-8879 and they will deliver some to them.

The Niagara Shores Garden Club of Newfane will hold its next meeting at 7 tonight at the home of Marybeth Gammack. The topic will be “Communication Between Plants.” New officers for 2014 will be installed. They include Barbara Reabold, president; Maureen Koziolek, vice president; Nancy Beakman, secretary and Beth Cooke, treasurer. New members are always welcome. The Newfane Library will be holding a book sale at the Winery at Marjim Manor, through Feb. 10. Browse through the selection in the magnificent building on the lake, and if you purchase a book, your wine tasting is free (age 21 or over). Visit marjimmanor.com for other winery events, including another ghost hunt in February.

Sign up now for the next AARP Smart Driver Course with instructor Pat Ludwig. It will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 5 and 6 at Faith Lutheran Church. You must register by Jan. 31, but this class fills up quickly. The cost is $20 for AARP members or $25 for non-members; all ages are welcome. The certificate of completion can get you a three-year discount on auto insurance or reduce license points. Call Ludwig at 433-0976.
