There are a lot of Relay For Life participants in Newfane, working all year round to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The 2014 Relay season has a Star-Spangled Relay theme and the kick-off celebration is scheduled for 10 a.m. Feb. 1 at Roy B. Kelley Elementary School Cafeteria in Lockport. Lockport Relay participants will celebrate 2013 Relay For Life successes and get ready to break $2,000,000 together in 2014!

Save the date for “Love: Hearts & Hands” at Faith Lutheran Church in Newfane on Feb. 8. There will be a Valentine’s Day vendor/craft fair, pasta dinner and Chinese auction. For more information, call 778-8488 and I’ll print details as soon as they become available.

Engraved brick orders are still being taken at Olcott Beach Carousel Park. Engraved bricks can commemorate a special occasion, honor someone, remember a loved one, or just to be a part of the park. The price for a 4 x 8 inch brick with three lines of up to 14 characters is $100. An 8 x 8 inch brick with six lines of up to 14 characters is $200. The park needs at least 25 brick orders in order to install the bricks and they are currently taking orders only. Once the park has received 25 orders, you will be contacted for payment. Any questions can be directed to Rosemary Sansone at 778-7066. Brick order forms can be downloaded from the park’s website at olcottbeachcarouselpark.org.

The Newfane Lions would like you to start looking for 2014’s Outstanding Adult and Youth. Write up that special adult who is always there for the kids or that high school student who is always helping out at school, church and around town. The candidate for the Outstanding Adult must be at least 21 years old and have positively contributed to the youth of the community. The candidate for the Outstanding Youth award must be under 21, have set a positive example within the community through their involvement, activities and accomplishments in school, church and community organizations. To make a nomination, send a letter or email expressing why you feel this person is worthy of being considered for this award. Judging is based solely on the information received. The more information given the committee, the more it will have to go on to make a selection. Nominations may be sent to Newfane American Legion Post 873, 6118 Corwin Ave., Newfane, NY 14108-1119, emailed to NewfaneLegion@yahoo.com or dropped off at the town clerk’s office.
