County health department holding programs

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The Niagara County Health Department is offering a pair of free programs, one involving diabetes prevention and the other on chronic disease self-managing.

The free diabetes prevention program will be held, starting on Jan. 23 at the Dale Association, 33 Ontario St. This is an evidence based, 16-week program, designed to help participants reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes, the department said. The classes are one hour in length and will run for 16 consecutive Thursdays. These sessions are followed by a group of 6 to 8 monthly sessions designed to offer additional support and help in maintaining lifestyle changes. The class will help participants to improve food choices, increase physical activity and learn coping skills to maintain weight loss and healthy lifestyle changes.

If a person is over 18 years of age and have been told by their physician that they are pre-diabetic, or have questions about whether they might qualify for this workshop, they can call 278-1900 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for more information and to register for the class.

The department of health, in collaboration with the Niagara County Department for the Aging, will also be offering free chronic disease self-management workshops throughout the county. The first workshop will be held at the Wheatfield Community Center located at 2790 Church Road, beginning Feb. 6. Another workshop will be held at the Eastern Niagara Hospital-Newfane Site, 2600 William St., beginning Feb. 7. Both workshops consist of six consecutive weekly classes that run from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The purpose of the workshop is to enhance one’s skills and ability to manage health and to maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle, the departments said. Program instructors encourage caregivers to attend as well, as the program provides opportunities for caregivers to learn, share and support each other.

If a person has a chronic health condition such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes or chronic pain, or if is a caregiver for someone with a chronic condition, they can contact NY Connects through the Office for the Aging at 438-3030 or the health department to register for the class.
