STROLL AROUND NEWFANE: Bring the kids out for Family Night

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The cold and snow may be a bother, but the white covering on the stately trees in Krull Park is truly breathtaking. It turns into a winter wonderland and is a perfect photo opportunity. Mother Nature has been brutal lately, but she sure is beautiful.

While we are all talking so much about the weather, here are some weather trivia facts:

• Dirty snow melts faster than clean snow.

• The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze completely solid.

• When you’re exposed to cold weather, your blood vessels constrict and the flow of blood to the skin is reduced, resulting in an overall slowdown of the circulatory system and a rise in blood pressure. To reduce this pressure, the body wants to get rid of as much fluid as possible through urine production. This phenomenon, known in medical terms as cold dieresis, explains why you may have to visit the bathroom more often when it’s cold.

• About half of deaths caused by exposure to cold (hypothermia) occur in people older than 60 years. More than 75 percent of the victims are men, and about 20 percent of deaths occur in the home. People older than 60 and children younger than one year are most susceptible to the cold. For these people, keep indoor temperatures above 69 degrees.

Everyone is invited to Family Night on Saturday at Olcott United Methodist Church, Main Street. The fun starts with a pot-luck dinner at 6 p.m. and is followed by a showing of the film “Lincoln.” Bring your favorite dish to share and your own table service. This will cut down on clean-up and make it more fun for all. Everyone is invited, the more the merrier!
