BARKER CHATTERBOX: Don't let the cold weather keep you away from these hot events

Think spring! The Barker Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Barker Village Hall meeting room. The program subject will be “Taking Care of Your Houseplants” with expert Bonnie Benton of Cornell Education Center. All gardeners are invited. A complete calendar of activities for 2014 will be distributed. Dues are $10 a year.

The next meeting of the Barker Seniors is Feb. 7 at the Barker Fire Hall. First grade pen pal Valentine cards must be turned in at this meeting and The “Good Ol’ Boys” are the featured entertainers. Pirate Bingo is on tap for Feb. 21. The menu is beef stroganoff over linguini, corn, warm dinner roll, bread pudding, milk, coffee or tea. The suggested donation price is $3.25. Call the Somerset Town Hall at 795-3575 to reserve a lunch. Remember that the meetings are canceled whenever the Barker Central Schools are closed because of the weather.

If you’d like to get away for a vacation, check out the trips with the Barker Seniors. Trips are open to the public when space permits.” There are a few seats left for the April trip to Lancaster Pa., for three days and two nights. The trip includes transportation, lodging, four meals, Sight and Sound Theatre’s “Moses” and American Music Theatre’s “Music of the Night by Andrew Lloyd Weber.” The cost is $350, double occupancy. The winter chicken barbecue by the Barker Fire Department brings us a taste of summer in the middle of winter. The drive-through dinner is scheduled for pickup from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 16. Dinners are $9 each and are pre-sale only, so get your tickets early. The menu is a half chicken, parsley potatoes, green beans, roll and a cookie. Contact any fire company member or call 795-3011 and leave a message.
