NEWFANE STROLL: Plenty going on at Olcott Beach

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — While you’re all out having fun in the sun this week, remember to be careful of those rays and use your sunscreen and shades. Children and pets need special attention in the heat and we all need to stay hydrated, so drink plenty of water. Remember that every sunburn increasing your chances for skin cancer later in life and play safe out there.

You should see Bark For Life signs popping up around town, a reminder to get registered for the first annual WNY Bark For Life on Aug. 5. There will be a special prize draw from among those who pre-register. It takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at Day Road Park in Lockport and it’s a chance for you to bring out your favorite pooch for a walk to fight cancer.

Have a cat instead? Enter our Kute Kitty Kontest by sending me a photo of your favorite feline and a $5 donation to the American Cancer Society. Get information at www.relayforlife.org/barkwesternny. There’ll be music, vendors, canine demos, a Chinese auction and more so everyone is invited to come down for a fun morning.

• The Olcott Carousel Park is fun all summer long. The park will be open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. and noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday. See the new 1940s Erie Digger Machine in the arcade. Also new to the park and located in the Skee Ball pavilion is a Pick Up a Duck game sponsored by the Lockport Optimists Club. Rides are still 25 cents. Listen to the organ music and get more info at www.olcottbeachcarouselpark.org 778-7066.

• The Lakeview Village Shoppes are currently open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to dusk Thursday through Saturday. You can also hook into free WIFI on the boardwalk. It is a great place to shop, have something to eat and enjoy the Lake Ontario view.
