CRIME: City man charged with menacing

Staff Reports
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

A city man has been accused of threatening a John Street woman with a baseball bat Monday evening.

Arnold M. Cogar, 48, 37 Mill St., upper, was charged Monday with second-degree menacing, seven counts of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, failure to keep right and failure to signal a turn.

A woman called police about 6:52 p.m. to report a man with a bat had just left her home in a white minivan.

The woman said she’d heard a knock on her apartment door. When she opened the door slightly, she saw a man she did not recognize.

The man, whom the woman later identified as Cogar, reportedly asked if “Sis” was there. The woman said she told him there was no one at the home by that name.

She told police she opened her door a little more and saw Cogar was allegedly holding an aluminum baseball bat.

Cogar allegedly raised the bat up in the air and yelled, “Don’t play games with me!”

The woman said she told him again there was no one there by that name, and began to shut the door.

Cogar reportedly said, “I’m sorry,” and the woman called 911. She said she looked out the window and saw him leaving in the white minivan.

A few minutes later, Cogar was pulled over on Walnut Street. A check of Cogar’s license reportedly showed he had 12 suspensions and revocations on his record.

Officers reportedly found the aluminum baseball bat in the back seat.

Cogar was held in lieu of $500 bail. He is due today in Lockport City Court on the menacing charge and Monday on the vehicle and traffic charges.
