Cops catch up with speeder

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — City police have caught up with a 23-year-old woman who allegedly drove through a radar stop at Summit Street and violated several traffic laws during a getaway on June 26.

Jeanine L. Burton, 6558 Lincoln Ave. Apt. 5 was charged with speeding, failure to obey a traffic control device, reckless driving, two counts of passing a red light, two counts of failure to signal, failure to keep right, unsafe lane change, failure to yield to emergency vehicle, aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing police and obstructing governmental administration.

She is to appear in Lockport City Court at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.

According to the report, Officer Steve Tarnoski was running radar on Summit Street when an SUV went by traveling 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Tarnoski activated his emergency light and attempted to make a stop.

Burton went right on a red light at South Transit and continued at a high rate of speed. Burton continued speeding, reaching near 100 mph, committing other traffic infractions and went through a light at Strauss Road, almost striking several vehicles, according to police reports. She went through another red light at Robinson Road, almost hitting other vehicles, and got away.

A witness called the police station, reporting a black SUV sped down his street and he saw a man fleeing from the vehicle. The police responded to Village Home Mobile Park and located the SUV at the end of Meadow Lane Drive. The SUV was not occupied, but a pair of ladies flip-flops were found outside the driver’s door.

The Buffalo man who fled the SUV was located outside Mike Smith Buick and taken back to Meadow Lane where he was identified. According to the passenger, Burton said, “I ain’t going back to jail” as she fled.

The SUV belongs to Empire and was rented to a Lancaster man.

Burton was arrested by Officer Anthony Pittman on at 8 p.m. Friday at a traffic stop on High Street on an active arrest package. She is back in the Niagara County jail, on a parole detainer.

Burton, who lived in Niagara Falls, was charged with unauthorized used of a vehicle in 2011 in Lockport.
