Domestic incident ends with serious injury

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — TOWN OF LOCKPORT –– A Tuesday morning fight between a couple ended with the stabbing of a Town of Lockport man.

Deputies found Austin Hager, 18, lying face down in an neighbor’s apartment at 6489 Dysinger Road while a neighbor applied pressure to a wound near the left kidney, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office reported. Hager reportedly was yelling in pain and blood was visible on his lower back.

Tricia E. Cassenti, 24, 6493 Robinson Road, apartment 6, was charged with second-degree assault with intent to cause serious physical injury. An investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau is continuing.

Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour said the stabbing was the result of a fight between Hager and Cassenti, who were boyfriend and girlfriend. The fight escalated into physical contact, ending with Cassenti allegedly stabbing Hager once.

“It was a domestic incident,” Voutour said. “A dispute in the hallway with some pushing and shoving. The female pulled out a knife.”

There was a witness to the fight, as well as a group of neighbors in the apartment when deputies arrived just after 11 a.m.

As deputies arrived, they were told Cassenti had left on foot and may have headed east two apartment buildings over, where she lived. As they pulled up to the back door of that apartment building, New York State Police arrived on scene.

At that point, dispatchers informed deputies Cassenti had called 911 from her apartment and was waiting for deputies to arrive. As law enforcement approached from both sides of the hallway, Cassenti reportedly put her hands in the air and spoke to the officers.

“I’m the one your looking for, I’m the one who stabbed him,” she said, according to the arrest report.

Voutour said the knife had a three-to-four inch blade and deputies identified it as a scuba knife. The knife was found on Cassenti, with blood and skin on the blade, according to the arrest report.

Hager was taken by Rapids Volunteer Ambulance with a Rural/Metro EMT to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.
