Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A traffic stop on Tonawanda Creek Road led to the arrest of a Lockport man wanted in Puerto Rico for allegedly selling heroin.

Juan D. Montanez-Melendez, 24, of 6495 Dysinger Road, was arrested at 8:25 p.m. Sunday after he was pulled over for speeding.

When the Niagara County Sheriff’s deputy ran a background check on Montanez-Melendez’s drivers license, the check revealed he had an outstanding warrant in Puerto Rico for selling heroin, weapons law and attenuated aggression.

Montanez-Melendez denied having any warrants or ever being arrested, but dispatchers were able to confirm all of the reported information including a copy of a mug shot and finger prints with the Puerto Rico Police Department in San Juan.

Puerto Rico officials said they will extradite.

Montanez-Melendez was remanded to the Niagara County Jail in lieu of $100 bail on the traffic ticket for Town of Lockport Court, and held with a detainer on the warrant for Puerto Rico.
