City man charged in Urban Park attack

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A Lockport man is facing a number of charges after attacking another city man at Urban Park Towers on Wednesday.

Joshua D. Cooney, 26, 111 Elmwood Ave., Apt. 3, was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree robbery, third-degree assault, third-degree menacing and second-degree strangulation, according to the Lockport Police Department.

Officers were called to 77 Main St. by a man who reportedly was attacked by Cooney. The victim said he heard a knock at his door but didn’t see anyone there when he looked through the door’s peephole. When he opened the door, Cooney reportedly pushed through him and forced his way into the victim’s apartment.

Both men fell to the floor with Cooney on top of the victim. He allegedly began choking the victim, shouting that the victim should die. He reportedly punched the victim in the face several times, knocking him unconscious. When the victim awoke he crawled into the doorway and screamed for help, according to the arrest report.

The victim told police Cooney thought he owed him money, so Cooney took $95 from him. Police said they saw surveillance tape of Cooney in the Urban Park building and afterwards the victim picked Cooney out of a photo lineup.

Cooney was seen by police walking down LaGrange Avenue on Wednesday. He was taken into custody without incident and is scheduled to appear Monday in Lockport City Court.
