Phony 'road patrol' encounter reported

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — NEWFANE — A woman reported to the Niagara County Sheriff's office that she was pulled over on Ewings Road early Sunday by a man pretending to be a police officer.

The woman said a vehicle, which appeared to be an early 2000s model pickup truck, was following her closely on Coomer Road and began flashing its headlights at her around 12:45 a.m. The woman said she became nervous, pulled over to the side of the road and allowed the truck to pass her. She said she thought one of the headlights may have been brighter than the other.

The woman resumed driving and turned onto Ewings Road, where the truck appeared behind her again and began following her closely. She said when she saw red and blue lights start flashing on the top of the truck, she pulled off the road again again. An unknown male approached her and said he was with "road patrol."

The woman said the male wore a khaki jacket and blue jeans and was approximately 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, with dark brown hair that was three to four inches long. The man was holding what appeared to be a mag light flashlight and asked her several times if she had been drinking.

The woman offered to submit to a breathalyzer test and the man said "we don't do that."

Instead, the man took the woman's ID in hand and went to his truck. He shut off the red and blue lights and remained in the truck for about five minutes, then exited, approached the woman's vehicle, returned her ID and told her, "just be careful."

According to the sheriff's office, the woman's license plate history was not checked, and her vehicle was not called in as having been stopped, by any police officer on Sunday.
