Lockport man victimized by phone scam

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A Tonawanda Creek Road man was recently robbed of $1,700 through a telephone scam that has been making its way around the internet.

The scam involves the culprits successfully convincing a victim that he still owes money on a loan.

According to a report from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy responded to the victim’s home to investigate a harassment reeport. The vicitm told the deputy that he received a cell phone call from a man who identified himself as “Phil” and representing a business called Cash Advance USA collection agency.

Phil told the victim he owed $445.37 for a cash advance loan he had taken out. The suspect threatened to send someone to the victim’s place of employment and have him arrested if he did not pay the amount.

The victim told the deputy that he took out a cash advance loan “a couple of years ago” but was sure he paid the loan back in full. Still, the victim went to Wal-Mart and put the $445.37 on a Money Pack card, called the male back and paid the amount in full.

About two hours later the victim received a second call from “Phil,” who put the victim on the line with his supervisor, “Marshall King Robinson,” who advised him that he still owed $1,255 on the account.

According to the victim, Robinson told him that he works for the law office of “Russell Miller,” and said “you will go to prison for seven years and you will die if this debit is not paid.”

The victim called a couple friends and family members to borrow the $1,255 then went back to Wal-Mart and put the $1,255 on three separate Money Pack cards. He then called Robinson back and gave him the account numbers on all three Money Pack cards.
