Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A Lockport man has been charged with falsely reporting an incident after he was spotted driving the car he had reported stolen back in January.
Joshua Gates, 29, 1266 Ridgewood Drive, was charged Tuesday with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and giving a false statement to police when Lockport police saw him driving a 2013 Nissan Sentra on High Street. That was the vehicle Gates had told police was stolen from him almost six months ago.
On Jan. 21, Gates reported that an acquaintance he knew only by his first name had asked to borrow his vehicle. When Gates met up with the acquaintance later, the man told him that another person had borrowed the vehicle and would be right back.
Gates told police that he did not see the acquaintance or the vehicle after that. The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office and Niagara Falls police were also notified.
But in April, after an investigation into the matter, police determined that Gates had given a false report and statement, according to the arrest report.
On Tuesday Gates was arrested and taken to Lockport Police Department headquarters in lieu of $250 bail. Gates is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Lockport City Court.
