Eggs tossed at Appleton home, post office

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Vandals went on a mini crime spree in Appleton sometime between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, destroying solar lights, tossing eggs and lowering a flag at the Appleton post office.

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Appleton Post Office on Hess Road just before 8 a.m. Saturday to investigate a criminal mischief report.

An employee of the United States Postal Service stationed at the Appleton Post Office told the deputy that when she arrived for work, she noticed a raw egg had been thrown against the front wall of the Post Office.

After looking around the property some more, the employee noticed that the American flag that had been raised to the top of the flag pole on the south side of the parking lot next to the building had been untied and lowered to the ground.

In addition, about a half dozen plastic solar lights with red, white and blue bases were found next to the driveway of the post office. Many of the lights were broken, and the deputy reported that they appeared to have been run over by vehicles.

An owner of the lights had not been identified.

Further investigation found that an egg was thrown against the front door at 1907 Hess Road, causing minimal damage.

The sheriff's department did not report if it had any leads or if an investigation is continuing.
