Cookout turns into robbery

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A Newfane man is facing robbery and child endangerment charges following a cookout that turned into a serious incident on Saturday.

Andrew Patterson, 23, 2682 North Main St. was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, first-degree robbery, second-degree menacing and petit larceny.

Bad weather forced a Town of Lockport woman's cookout indoors on Saturday, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office. As the cookout was ending, the woman's fiancee started taking people home.

While he was gone, Patterson asked the woman to use her cell phone. He reportedly made three calls before the woman took the phone back. Patterson went into a back bedroom to check on a little girl who had fallen asleep.

After a few minutes, the little girl was carried out of the house by her mother. At that point, deputies reported, Patterson came from the bedroom holding a silver bladed folding knife and the Town of Lockport woman's purse. Patterson allegedly pointed the knife at the town woman as he went through the purse looking for money.

When he found some money, Patterson reportedly threw the purse to the ground and told the woman if she called the police she would have "more problems." He was picked up by a maroon four-door sedan, which took off at a high rate of speed.

About $400 was taken, the arrest report said.

The town woman called deputies, who were familiar with Patterson from previous dealings. Deputies checked the phone numbers Patterson had called on the victim's phone and one had been traced to an apartment on Lincoln Place.

Deputies went to the apartment and reportedly found several people inside the apartment "actively injecting an unknown substance into their arms," the report said. Hypodermic needles and narcotics were found in the apartment.

Deputies called the Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Niagara County Drug Task Force for further investigation.

Deputies found Patterson in the apartment, who then was taken to the sheriff's office for questioning. He was arrested and taken to Niagara County Jail on $10,000 bail.
