Sheriff's department warns of bottle bombs

Two found in Town of Lockport Sunday

LOCKPORT — The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to beware plastic bottles laying on the ground.

Sunday the department discovered two pop bottle bombs laying in the street of a cul-de-sac in the Town of Lockport.  One had already detonated, and the other one detonated soon after patrol arrived on location.

One bomb was contained in a plastic Gatorade bottle and the second was in a two-liter pop bottle.

Bottle bombs had surfaces in the City of Lockport earlier this summer. One exploded in Outwater Park in early July and another had to be detonated by State Police around the same time.

”The potential for injury really high,” Lockport Chief of Police Lawrence Eggert said at the time. “If you see one, don’t pick it up. Stay away from it.”

The bombs are made by combining normal household items inside a plastic bottle. When the bottle is agitated, pressure builds up and the bottle explodes, sending acid flying as far as 30 feet.

”It’s been around for a while,” the chief said. “It comes and goes. They’ve been put in mail boxes and are really loud.”

The sheriff's deparment suggests anyone coming into contact with one of these homemade bombs steer clear of it and call 911 of the Niagara County Sheriff's Office at 438-3393 immediately.
